چکیده

Firms use inventory and interruption insurance to manage disruption risk in their production chains. They also take preparedness actions to reduce the expected length of disruptions. We analytically explore these three measures in a two-stage production chain. We find that inventory and preparedness differ in their responses to insurance and to production-chain cost and risk characteristics. We prove that, for any fixed level of preparedness, insurance reduces both the total inventory and the downstream inventory but it can increase the upstream inventory. The total inventory, the upstream inventory, and the production-chain profit all increase (decrease) as cost (risk) shifts downstream in the production chain. Downstream inventory moves in the opposite direction. If the firm adopts the preparedness measure but not inventory, we prove that insurance has no impact on the relative levels of upstream/downstream preparedness. Relative preparedness is also unaffected by the distribution of processing cost in the production chain. However, when the firm can adopt both operational measures – inventory and preparedness – the relative preparedness is affected by insurance and by the distribution of processing cost across the production chain. We numerically observe that the production chain profit increases as cost shifts downstream and risk shifts upstream.

An Inventory-production Model for Supply Chain Under Partial Backordering and Disruption

We consider a three-level distribution network involving a raw material supplier with imperfect quality, a manufacturer and several retailers. A production-inventory model accompanied by a partial backlogging approach is developed by considering random disruptions. Any batch received from the supplier is inspected by the manufacturer and if any flaw is visited, all the goods in the inspected ba...

Managing Disruption Risk: The Interplay Between Operations and Insurance

Disruptive events that halt production can have severe business consequences if not appropriately managed. Business interruption (BI) insurance offers firms a financial mechanism for managing their exposure to disruption risk. Firms can also avail of operational measures to manage the risk. In this paper we explore the relationship between BI insurance and operational measures. We model a manuf...

A Risk-averse Inventory-based Supply Chain Protection Problem with Adapted Stochastic Measures under Intentional Facility Disruptions: Decomposition and Hybrid Algorithms

Owing to rising intentional events, supply chain disruptions have been considered by setting up a game between two players, namely, a designer and an interdictor contesting on minimizing and maximizing total cost, respectively. The previous studies have found the equilibrium solution by taking transportation, penalty and restoration cost into account. To contribute further, we examine how incor...

A New Combination of Robust-possibilistic Mathematical Programming for Resilient Supply Chain Network under Disruptions and Uncertainty: A Real Supply Chain (RESEARCH NOTE)

Nowadays, the design of a strategic supply chain network under disruption is one of the most important priorities of the governments. One of the strategic purposes of managers is to supply the sustainable agricultural products and food in stable conditions which require the production of soil nutrients. In this regard, some disruptions such as sanctions and natural disasters have a destructive ...

Stability of the Supply Chain Based on Disruption Classification

Original scientific paper Disruptions can destroy the stability of a supply chain resulting in losses in business, thus, determining the influence of various disruptions on a supply chain is significant. However, current studies have mainly concentrated on the stability of a supply chain under normal conditions, exploring the effects of inventory level on the system state and omitting the influ...
